How do I get my licence?
Before you can begin your lessons you will need to get a NSW Learners Licence.
- You must be 16 years or over
- Go to an RTA office and pick up a Road Users Handbook $10.00 or download online here for free
- At the RTA office you should also get a licence application form
- Pass a Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and an eyesight test.
- The Driver Knowledge Test is a computer based road rules test and out of 45 questions you need to get 41 answers correct to pass.
- There will be 15 general knowledge questions (minimum 12 correct) and 30 road safety questions, including traffic sign (minimum 29 correct)
- Study the Road Users Handbook and you can try a mock test online or in your local RTA office
- When you believe you are ready to take your Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) go to an RTA office (you may need to book ahead) and take the licence application, $20.00 for the learners licence when you pass and the identification which is on the licence application
- When you pass you must do an eye test, have your photograph taken for your learners licence and you should receive your learners licence
- Make sure you get a Learner Driver Log Book before you leave the RTA office
Please note: There is a fee of $35.00 for each attempt of the Driver Knowledge Test
Now that you have passed the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) here are a few things you should know about the learners licence: - Your maximum speed is 80KM/H
- There must be plates displayed back and front on the outside of the vehicle
- You must have a holder of a full licence supervising you at all times
- You must have Zero (nil) Blood Alcohol Concentration (you can not drink anything with alcohol and check with your doctor because some medication can‘t be used)
- Your learner licence is valid for 3 years
- You are not allowed to tow anything behind the vehicle
- If you are over 25 you must hold your Learners Licence for a minimum of 6 months before you can attempt the Driving Ability Road Test (DART)
- You must be 16 or over and if you have held your Learners Licence before this will count to the 12 month minimum rule
- The RTA have increased terms for supervised driving hours for learner drivers.
Learner drivers getting their licence on or after 1 July 2007 will need to hold their learner licence for a minimum of 1 year and complete at least 120 hours of supervised driving including 20 hours of night driving then you can apply for the P1 licence - Mobile phones, including hands free are not to be used by the learner driver
- By law seatbelts must be worn by all occupants of the vehicle and approved child restraints fitted.
- The learner driver banned from using Centennial Park for practice when in Sydney
- When your Log Book is filled out and you believe you are ready for your P1 test (red P's) a booking will be made with an RTA office for your driving test (DART)
